Failed LTA Projects

The list of failed LTA Projects is long.  In many cases, the causes of failure have been linked to lack of finance; starting a project without sufficient funding to see it through,  in-sufficient funding to overcome unforseen technical challenges, or mis-spending the available funding.

G-01 StratSat: Novel applications for the commercial and military sectors

This paper describes novel and previously unreported commercial and military applications for StratSat: the Lighter-Than-Air vehicle currently being designed by Advanced Technologies Group.

F-01 The state of airship international

The airship regulations for both airworthiness and operations are currently in a state of flux. Rules for the safe construction of small airships, which have been used in the past, are clearly insufficient for the large airships currently being planned or constructed.

E-03 RPAs at Work

This paper is a report on the missions completed in Bosnia using MARIA the Mined Area Reconnaissance & Investigation Airship. It includes detail on task requirements, operational hazards and equipment specifications.

E-02 The practical application of local meteorological knowledge

It is in the nature of commercial airship operations that is necessary from time to time to operate above large cities, and to land and take-off from suitable sites within large city areas.

D-01 Air-supported shelter for a small-volume airship

The present paper offers a design of an air-supported shelter for a small-volume airship by an example of a hangar for the Au-12 F airship with a volume of 1,000 cu. m.

C-01 Airships in the gas transportation trades

During the early seventies Shell International Gas (SIG) and Aerospace Developments Limited (ADL) set up a project to study the transportation of Natural Gas (NG) by airship from the Middle East to the UK.

B-12 Hybrid Rigid/ Non Rigid 160 tonne lift Airship

Bruce Blake would make the point in December 2001 Page25 Airship No 134 that non-rigid airship envelopes are monocoque, primary structures. He also makes the point such envelopes are capable of catastrophic failure (we know many examples).

B-10 Flight control system design for KARI unmanned airship

The overall design architecture of the flight control system for KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) unmanned airship, which is under development by KARI, is introduced including its hardware and software.

A21 - Dynamic Response and Controls of Airship for Cruising, Busan National University, Gust effects

To acquire the dynamic response and design the controller of the airship, the longitudinal motion of the airship, which is a nonlinear system, with respect to the vertical gust have been studied. The effects of the apparent mass and moment of the airship delay the dynamic response and the settling time, which are slower than those of conventional airplanes. This airship is designed to cruise at 500 ~ 1000m altitude. At that altitude, the atmospheric conditions are generally unstable due to wind gusts.
