Hybrid Airship

Any aerial vehicle which uses aerostatic principles to provide the greater part of its lift for the airframe, and aerodynamic principles to provide the lift for a specified dischargeable load.

Cardington site under threat of residential development

Sheds One and Two at Cardington Airfield, UK. Airship manufacturing and maintenance facilities are rare, given the size and volume of the vessels that they were designed to house, and most of those facilities are in the USA.

Recent Developments

Over the last 30 years, small teams of engineers and businessmen have worked to develop the airship concept.  Using advances in engineering techniques, improved materials and practical innovation these groups have tested new ideas, and in many cases re-discovered concepts that have lain dormant until the materials sciences could catch up.  Occasionally larger corporations or government departments put some effort in to projects to investigate the state of the market; but shifting personnel, budgetary constraints and a lack of immediate need, have usually closed down these projects

Light of Day for LEMV

A photograph on a social networking site shows that the US Army hybrid airship known as the Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle (LEMV)  has finally seen the light of day.  LEMV was rolled out of the historic Hangar No 1 at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (formerly Naval Air Station Lakehurst) on the morning of 3 July 2012.  The vehicle has not yet flown, as far as we are aware.

Hybrid Air Vehicles changes logo

Hybrid Air Vehicles in Bedfordshire is re-branding its image and has changed its logo. Delegates to the Ashford Conference would be able to meet Mr Gordon Taylor of HAV and ask him about the re-branding. He will be giving a keynote presentation entitled HAV: Programme Status.

Hybrid Airships

Hybrid Airships attempt to combine aerostatic lift, from the conventional Lighter Than Air (LTA) concept, with various Aerodynamic lift capabilities derived from the heavier-than-air industry. Hybrid airships have been proposed for many years, and there are a variety of projects that have attempted to marry the technologies together.
