Previous Presidents of the Airship Association

Dr Bernd Sträter Dipl. Ing.  2010 - 2016

Dr Sträter studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University in Darmstadt. In 1969 he worked as an assistant professor at the Institute of Aeronautical Engineering at the Technische Hochschule – Darmstadt with research activities in aircraft design, aeronautics and wind tunnel techniques and attained his PhD in 1976. Dr Sträter has since held many positions within the aeronautics industry notably with Dornier Aviation GmbH. After the sale by Deutsche Aerospace (DASA) of Dornier Aviation to Fairchild, Dr Sträter was appointed by the DASA board to be President and Managing Director of Eurocolumbus, the European space station programme company managing the Columbus module. Following this Dr Sträter became manager of the profit centre Daimler Benz Airport Systems

In 1999 Dr Sträter was appointed President and Managing Director of Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH and Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei GmbH (DZR). Following his retirement from DZR, Dr Sträter now runs his own aeronautical consultancy.  Dr Sträter is a registered expert for aeronautical engineering, aircraft design and operation and LTA in the EU and Germany and was recently appointed to evaluation teams in Berlin and Brussels.

Air Chief Marshal Sir John Gingell, GBE, KCB, KCVO 1994 to 2009:  Air Chief Marshal Sir John Gingell filled numerous senior posts in the RAF and in Nato before his final appointment in the RAF in 1980 as Deputy Commander-in-Chief at Allied Forces Central Europe (AFCENT), headquartered at Brunsum in Holland. Gingell retired from the RAF in 1984, and in January the next year was appointed Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod and Secretary to the Lord Great Chamberlain, posts he held for seven years. Air Chief Marshal Gingell accepted the role of President of the Airship Association in 1994 and played an active part, guiding and advising the council, until his death in December 2009.

Professor I C Cheeseman 1984 to 1994.  Professor Cheeseman was better known for his work in the rotary wing world, working for some years at the National Gas Turbine Establishment, before moving take up the position of head of the Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics at the University of Southampton.

Air Marshal Sir Victor Goddard 1972 to 1984.  Air Marshal Sir Victor Goddard was the founding President of the Airship Association; having served with Dirigibles in the RNAS during the first World War.  Sir Victor Goddard remained a stong proponent of Airships until his death.
